The brief

A one-of-a kind brief from a one-of-a-kind couple with the idea that the moment someone steps up to the front door of this incredible couple’s incredible home, they must, in short, be dumbfounded!

A home where you wander around from room to room, mouths open, casting your eyes in disbelief over all that bold colour, their truly remarkable collection of art & disparate objects picked up over their seemingly endless travels, funky fabrics, hand-picked knobs, installations by local artists… the list goes on, and on, and on!

An off-beat space that feels a little like stumbling absent-mindedly into some kind of alternate universe - a sort of ‘down the rabbit hole’ experience.

The Living Room

The Door Wall: always the Elephant in this room. A big, bold, psychedelically colourful wall made of multiple sized doors and windows each with a story to tell.

On its face, it leads to nowhere but secretly there are doors which will lead you to a rather funky speakeasy, the one you’d want access to post curfew at the microbreweries of Bangalore.

BOOKSHELF

A larger than life bookshelf filled with old precious books collected by the lady of the house over the years and all their travel paraphernalia.

FURNITURE

The cozy reading nook within the bookshelf, the circus couch, the snooty highback chair for the Queen of Hearts, and those strangely similar but strangely mismatched (in that brother-from-another-mother sort of way) single couches- all coming together is what turns into a perfect gathering place for the eclectics at heart who get to hover here.

THE DINING ROOM

Once you’re down this Rabbit hole, your Cup O’Tea will be served to you on a sturdy farmhouse table with restored & rehomed antique chairs, a backdrop of wall with all things topsy-turvy and a clever café window to dole out the candies to their daughter and her friends.

And to no one’s surprise, the curtain here is a scrap fabric garland in hues of macaroons and well, there’s that buffet counter too as the Hatters of this house love to feed.

THE KITCHEN

Lewis Carroll may be English but this kitchen is certainly Indian at heart (with blue floor and motif in the backsplash) and French in its cabinetry. The meals that come out of here are primarily ‘mal’ and the Hatters have a knack for it.

Details

French Bakery Stencil on cabinets + clock face ceramic knobs

A Speakeasy + Entertainment Lounge + the (secret) Powder Room

If you’re lucky enough to get entry into this bold & lively speakeasy, you’ll find yourself exploring layers of musical and retro elements: street art inspired graffiti on wall (inspired from the Hatters love for graffiti), a bar made of locally sourced antique radios and speakers, grunge dance floor, a retro storage unit, an incredibly comfy couch, and a carnival ticket window door which truly does land you into an alternate world inhabited by the characters from The Story.

THE GUESTS’

A room designed for guests to enjoy a brief departure from the mundane, to transport them someplace else.

If you pay attention, you would realise that this very Mediterranean-Greek style room is actually more South-Indian (with a twist, of course) and those white plastered walls are a mere disguise.

The red oxide flooring is replaced with acid blue tiles embellished with red motifs, the traditional four poster bed, the classical side unit, & the ceiling rafters are all there but with a fresh coat of white, and the old military trunks are, well, now a side-table.

The Hatters keenness on passionate red comes through breezy traditional drapes in red and their precious collection of artworks by artist Paul Fernandes, are proudly displayed on the wall for you to soak in tales of Bangalore in the ‘70s.

THE DAUGHTER’S

A bright, happy, and whimsical room where fantasy takes over and transforms into a magical space that makes anything seem possible.

Magic and whimsy is created through characters, objects, and scenes from multiple fairy tales and fables coming to life in every nook and cranny.

Every single element of this room is tied to a popular children’s story.

A fanciful door just like that in Alice in Wonderland, with separate top and bottom halves, making the entrance to the room an opening to a new world

A floor to ceiling wardrobe, shaped like a gingerbread house from Hansel & Gretel- a delish home for our little girl’s clothes

The princess’ very own Princess & Pea bed;

The Magic Faraway tree ready to whisk her off to the lands of spells & treats, toys & dreams, and more;

On the pillar (between the open storage), sits Santa’s special scout from the North Pole, the Elf on the shelf, to watch over her;

A Golden Ticket for a study table to embark on a wild adventure and meet the amazing, Willy Wonka?

….bringing to life some of childhood’s most memorable and endearing stories.

THE MASTER

The varied décor styles the Hatters like come together in this room to create a , bold mélange of neo-rustic, neo-victorian, industrial, and romantic/boho elements.

A Moroccan bathroom flows into an industrial bedroom with a sitting alcove infused with old world charm and romanticism, flowing on into a simple, yet masculine, study space and eventually ending in a colourful and green bohemian space.

This bedroom may overwhelm the fainter of heart but for the Hatters it’s a snug and wondrous haven to weave many magical dreams.
